2020 Oscars Predictions

I rarely have time to watch all the movies that are nominated for all the different categories but this year I was able to sit through them and I know what I like and I think I know what the oscars voting body will pick. here are my predictions:

  • ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
    • ANTONIO BANDERAS
      • Pain and Glory
    • LEONARDO DICAPRIO
      • Once upon a Time…in Hollywood
    • ADAM DRIVER
      • Marriage Story
    • JOAQUIN PHOENIX- should win and will win
      • Joker
        • His performance is quintessential artistic Hollywood actor. He sacrifices his body for the role by losing weight. (i guess by that definition every female actor should get an Oscar). But on top of that his performance is top notch…I just hope he doesn’t do the whole I’m to cool for this thing he did at the golden globes. Many people work as hard if not harder than you and never get nominated so don’t throw away this honor as a marketing ploy for your movie.
    • JONATHAN PRYCE
      • The Two Popes
  • ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
    • TOM HANKS
      • A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
    • ANTHONY HOPKINS – should win
      • The Two Popes
        • His performance is brilliant in this. It is subtle but brilliant nonetheless.
    • AL PACINO
      • The Irishman
    • JOE PESCI
      • The Irishman
    • BRAD PITT – will win
      • Once upon a Time…in Hollywood
        • Hollywood pretty boy. An ok actor but not worthy of an Oscar for this.
  • ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
    • CYNTHIA ERIVO –should win
      • Harriet
        • Playing an iconic person in history and not making her efforts grandiose. It’s not easy to play someone of this stature and still make her relatable.
    • SCARLETT JOHANSSON
      • Marriage Story
    • SAOIRSE RONAN
      • Little Women
    • CHARLIZE THERON
      • Bombshell
    • RENÉE ZELLWEGER – will win
      • Judy
        • Like Erivo playing an iconic person, but one that known by many. There are a lot biographies depicting this person. Renée does a great job but I don’t Hinkleman it’s the best.
  • ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
    • KATHY BATES
      • Richard Jewell
    • LAURA DERN – will win
      • Marriage Story
        • It’s just Laura Dern playing Laura Dern. Not really acting to me. Not really the role for an Oscar
    • SCARLETT JOHANSSON
      • Jojo Rabbit
    • FLORENCE PUGH
      • Little Women
    • MARGOT ROBBIE – Should Win
      • Bombshell
        • Not really excited about any of these nominees really, but if I had to choose one it would be Robbie.  She did a fine job Bombshell.  But not as good as Julia Fox in Uncut Gems.
  • ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
    • HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD
      • Dean DeBlois, Bradford Lewis and Bonnie Arnold
    • I LOST MY BODY
      • Jérémy Clapin and Marc du Pontavice
    • KLAUS – Should Win
      • Sergio Pablos, Jinko Gotoh and Marisa Román
        • A new and artful interpretation of the Santa Claus story.
    • MISSING LINK
      • Chris Butler, Arianne Sutner and Travis Knight
    • TOY STORY 4 – Will Win
      • Josh Cooley, Mark Nielsen and Jonas Rivera
        • Left overs from the same meal. They keep saying we’ll tell the story if we can think of a good one. This really wasn’t a good one. Cute but not art.
  • CINEMATOGRAPHY
    • THE IRISHMAN
      • Rodrigo Prieto
    • JOKER
      • Lawrence Sher
    • THE LIGHTHOUSE
      • Jarin Blaschke
    • 1917 – Should Win and Will Win
      • Roger Deakins
        • An entire movie in one continuous shot and on this scale.  This took a lot of work to make it happen and the movie overall is great.
    • ONCE UPON A TIME…IN HOLLYWOOD
      • Robert Richardson
  • COSTUME DESIGN
    • THE IRISHMAN
      • Sandy Powell and Christopher Peterson
    • JOJO RABBIT
      • Mayes C. Rubeo
    • JOKER
      • Mark Bridges
    • LITTLE WOMEN – Should Win and Will Win
      • Jacqueline Durran
        • Period piece..harder to do.
    • ONCE UPON A TIME…IN HOLLYWOOD
      • Arianne Phillips

    • WALK RUN CHA-CHA
      • Laura Nix and Colette Sandstedt
  • FILM EDITING
    • FORD V FERRARI – Should Win and Will Win
      • Michael McCusker and Andrew Buckland
        • Tough movie to edit and make it look like each cut goes to the next with all the racing action.  I actually think that 1917 should win for editing because being one shot is only an illusion that the editors make possible.
